Mid-Century Modern in Ojai – Kazumi Adachi (Renovations by Riley Pratt)

August 16, 2013 by Josiah Hamilton

This private family home, quietly nestled in the foothills of Ojai, was originally designed by architect Kazumi Adachi in 1952. The Mid Century Modern was completely and tastefully renovated in recent years by architect Riley Pratt of the Los Angeles firm of Marmol Radziner. Pratt was able to contribute the necessary state-of-the-art conveniences while sticking true with Adachi’s original vision.

The 3 Bed, 3 Bath home is over 2700 Sq Ft and includes a salt water pool and spa, detached studio with outdoor living space, (including fireplace and full outdoor kitchen), and a large ‘Zen’ garden.

The home is currently listed at $2,195,000 with Tonya Peralta of Keller Williams Realty.

If you have any questions regarding this home or others like it in the greater Santa Barbara area, please contact Josiah Hamilton at 805.284.8835 or email [email protected].

CL20: Suburban House Addition Prototype – Shubin + Donaldson

May 31, 2013 by Josiah Hamilton

This year, for the Santa Barbara Design Awards, a jury from the AIA evaluated 74 entries for a design contest held every three years. In each entry, these aficionados judge on design resolution, ‘contextualism’ and innovation. They appreciate buildings that utilize new techniques and building materials, preserve natural resources, enhance the environment, add to the community and just lift the spirit overall.(SBSeasons.com)

The team of Shubin & Donaldson won the 2012 Honor Award for this incredible home! Here is a detailed description of the award winner as seen on Shubin & Donaldson’s website

Resource Efficiency:

The flat roof provides an excellent platform for a photovoltaic array to service the CL20 and existing residence. The interior walls and ceiling are reclaimed clear Douglas fir.

All lighting is LED, and heating/cooling is provided by a high efficiency Mitsubishi split system.

This is a question that most American homeowners face at some point, especially owners of post-war built tract and “ranch style” homes. Our answer is the following:
1.  Pre-fab or modularize the construction as much as possible
2.  Minimize impact on existing home and yard as much as possible
3.  Maximize floor plan and wall adaptability
4.  Maximize energy and resource efficiency
5.  Use reclaimed construction materials where possibleThe 14 ft. x 34 ft.CL20 minimally connects to the existing house with a glass box connecting space. It deploys “off the shelf” structural steel moment frames that bolt to a standard concrete slab on grade. These 4 frames support the flat roof thus providing all the vertical and lateral support necessary for the entire structure. This allows floor plan flexibility and eliminates exterior shear walls. The CL20 exterior walls are custom installed dual pane insulated glass and proprietary sliding doors. This transparent glass box minimizes visual impact on the yard while providing maximum interior day lighting.

Summerland Beach Contemporary – Jan Hochhauser AIA

November 30, 2012 by Josiah Hamilton

This gorgeous Contemporary residence is situated right on Summerland Beach and was designed by noted local architect Jan Hochhauser. Making sure that the home was well-suited for a marine environment, a number of materials were used in the construction, including a full copper roof, stainless steel hardware, and slate flooring. The 3 Bed/4 Bath residence also has a nice open floorplan, accomodating a variety of uses and holding many exciting views of the ocean and islands.

Jan Robert Hochhauser, AIA, LEED AP – Jan R. Hochhauser has been practicing architecture in Santa Barbara since 1977 and founded Hochhauser Blatter Architecture and Planning in 1990. Mr. Hochhauser has been a Principal Architect and Lead Designer on a variety of municipal, institutional and residential projects in his more then 30 years of practice.

Mr. Hochhauser’s work has received acclaim for its design innovation and contextual responsiveness to the site and community. The careful attention to detail is evident in his complete body of work.
