Whitehead/Bay Residence, Montecito: Hochhauser Blatter Architecture

April 5, 2012 by Josiah Hamilton

The Whitehead/Bay Residence was designed by the Hochhauser Blatter Architecture and Planning Firm out of Santa Barbara. This 5,400 square foot residence demonstrates exactly how a dream home is supposed to look. The modern home is located in Montecito, California. It features three bedrooms, three full bathrooms, half baths and bedroom guesthouse. If you are a landscape fanatic, this residence is perfect for you. The beautiful landscape makes it simple to fall in love with nature. Grey shade is utilized for its exteriors, which surprises despite the fact it is both neutral and subtle. The 360 degree view of the surrounding landscape and the beautiful interior design make the architecture truly inspirational inside and out.

Hochhauser Blatter has been engaged to provide custom architectural design services on a wide range of residential and commercial assignments. Projects include high-end custom residences, multi-family and subsidized housing, museums, commercial retail centers, courthouse and municipal buildings, out-patient surgery and hospice facilities, waterfront marina buildings and adaptive re-use/historic rehabilitation projects. This contemporary residence incorporates a variety of volumes to offer the user an array of spaces which accommodate different functions. An isolated skylighting system is employed in a very significant way to create habitable atrium space that is user friendly.

B3 Architects-Ortega Ridge Residence, Summerland, CA

March 15, 2012 by Josiah Hamilton

The creation of a structure on this highly visible hilltop site presented a challenge that resulted in the sculpting of a highly articulated silhouette to accommodate axial living functions while capturing a 360-degree viewscape. This structure mitigates the intense sun and wind patterns by orientation and courtyard footprint, while taking advantage of its south solar orientation.

The constructed form capitalizes on its hilltop vistas by functioning as a series of pavilions oriented to distant views. Glass walls lend transparency to the home, allowing patterns of landscape and light to be enjoyed within the structure. Limestone-clad sentinels capped with glass clerestories illuminate the interior passageways. A material pallet of limestone, steel, copper, plaster and glass articulate the forms that crown the hill. The sentinels reference the strength of trees and lighthouses found on the coastal plain. A series of pools bisect the interior living space and disappear with an infinity edge toward the ocean.

spectacular contemporary home, hope ranch-Shubin+Donaldson Architects

March 8, 2012 by Josiah Hamilton

A “contemporary house with a Mexican flavor” is what the art-collecting client requested. Shubin + Donaldson responded with a contextual mélange of multiple orthogonal volumes that are monumental to reflect a refined Mexican spirit in shape as well as in material. The solidity of forms on one side of the home speaks to the Mexican flavor of the structure, while the abundance of glazing on the other side relates to the physical context of the coastal site.

Responding to the site, Shubin + Donaldson created a constant interplay between indoor and outdoor in a continual effort to frame views and compose angles. Upon entering the building, beyond the play of forms, is the surprise view through the entry toward the negative-edge reflecting pool and out to the ocean beyond. Large, floor-to-ceiling windows wrap around a fountain, which also brings light into the home. One can go from the living room to dining room across the stepping stones in the central reflecting pool.

An indoor swimming pool is accessed down the stairs from the master suite through a curved corridor that sports a rare hint of vibrant color. A deep orange curving corridor and sparkling blue wall in the pool house are a nod to a traditional Mexican palette. Three skylights punctuate the space that houses a 60-foot-long lap pool.

The owners wanted the house to have public spaces for social events. The dramatic, open foyer and entry create a seamless experience for visitors as they journey from exterior to interior. Exterior limestone is repeated in the flooring, with contrasting darker limestone stripes echoing the ceiling articulation. Mexican Tzalam wood is used for the custom-made doors, the spectacular interior bridge, and the interior wood floors.
